"We are of this world, and as with any piece that seeks to leave its element, there is a void when we abandon the mortal. It must be that this would hold our returning to the Maker. It must be that we should seek balance. It must be that the Maker's first children aid the second."

Backstory

Raised in a large noble family in Ostwick in the Free Marches, Trystan Trevelyan was the youngest son of Bann Trevelyan. His was a life of unquestionable devotion to Andraste and to his family. When he watched as his older siblings one by one became Templars and Clerics, he just knew he wanted to be a Templar too. It turned out that he was a failure at swordsmanship, but that didn't stop him from trying to pursue his dream anyway.

His misery over failing carried throughout his early childhood, and he was a bit of an outcast because of that. The only close friend he had died in an accident when they were both seven, pushing him to further isolation. Spending so much time alone, he started inadvertently conjuring up spirits on occasion to keep himself company... including that of his friend and of a beloved lost mabari as well. Nothing major or strong, and they never lasted very long, but they were his solace and his secret for a few years. In an incident at age ten, Trystan inadvertently performed his necromancy trick in front of some others (which shocked and horrified them, of course). He was frightened at first at being taken away to the Circle from his family, and jealous of those family members who'd become Templars. He'd been taken away to be a mage, and all he still wanted was to escape that life and become a Templar. Making up plans to run away became his side hobby, but of course, it was pretty impossible to get away. During this time, he became well known as a troublemaker, overall very bitter and uncooperative. He was "scared straight" when threatened with becoming Tranquil, and from then on did his best to keep from stirring things up. He directed his energies more completely toward his studies.

He still often rebelled throughout his later teenage years in much more quiet, sullen ways. He still refused the company of others, but this time his isolation was fully self-imposed. Fortunately, there were people around like Senior Enchanter Lydia, who taught him many important lessons that he needed to know, at times he needed to hear them. Unfortunately, he'd lost a lot of those spirit conjuring skills that had manifested in childhood. Still, he showed true talent in this area in particular and it was Lydia who encouraged him to return to honing this craft. Trystan eventually learned that he could, if he studied hard, learn to become a true necromancer. He also started getting along better with the other mages at this time too. He'd found a new purpose, because for the first time in his life he was not only accepted by others... he had found something he was good at and could be passionate about. At this time, he also befriended some Templars too, having an on again off again relationship with one.

The same day that he passed his Harrowing, war broke out between the mages and templars. Trystan took this as some sort of sign. His Circle remained (thankfully to him) neutral. Even after all of this time, Trystan still felt a deep loyalty toward the Templars. After all, many of them were family. But Templars still posed a threat and an attack by them really shook things up. Later, Trystan was urged to go to the conclave thanks to his family connections and overall position. His admiration of templars despite being a mage was much needed at this time. He reluctantly went, even though he'd always tried to stay out of political matters.

Then catastrophe struck...

Personality

"Modest in temper, bold in deed" is the house motto of Trevelyan, words which always hovered over Trystan's head and still do to this day.

He keeps a lot to himself, keeps his head down, and does as he's told... but sometimes "what he's told" isn't what he truly wants, which can lead him to very bitter moods. He's grown out of some of this, but occasionally he still might show his disagreement in less than productive ways. A melancholy sort, Trystan is prone to being idealistic and dreamy, and is often disappointed by reality. He's also not much for the sort of aristocratic lifestyle he was initially born into (when asked by Josephine why he didn't seem to be around at any of his family's summer parties, he responded with the "too awkward" dialogue option). He has a lot of morbid fascinations and tastes, too, which lend themselves well to his favored type of magic... But don't be too disturbed. His has always been a more... whimsical sort of love for the macabre, the sort of amusement from someone who laughs at the inevitable. Many of his jokes are death jokes. He also has a strange fascinating with fear, experiencing it and inflicting it. This definitely makes him odd company for sure.

Although he was once extremely devout, Trystan has had his faith challenged repeatedly over time. While he once naively and wholeheartedly believed himself the Herald of Andraste, having that whole thing shattered really brought out a lot of those "inner feelings" of his. He became angrier, more hostile, and a lot more likely these days to go for outright confrontations rather than peaceful negotiations. Still, there's an earnestness to him even now, particularly when it comes to friendships and relationships. This does mean he's very prone to heartbreak and over the top longing.

Trystan has a side to him that can best be described as superstitious. He fully believes that every dream, no matter how absurd, has some deeper meaning. He's the sort who will make a decision based on flipping a sovereign or see something in a blood-splatter pattern from a dead body. Or just... see odd and important things in the clouds. He's prone to seeing signs and wonders in very mundane things, one of the many reasons why he felt so sincerely about being the Herald. His faith may have been shaken somewhat, but he's still prone to latching onto grandiose beliefs. He's also very book-smart after all of that time he's spent alone reading and studying. But he spent so much time isolated that he's not very well experienced in many things. Oddly enough, freedom outside the Circle was overwhelming for him despite his earlier years of wishing he could leave. At times, he still feels this way and gets flustered if he's taken out of his normal routine. He's also prone to outbursts of agitation when he's really pushed beyond the normal point of frustration. A nice outburst of magic usually sets him straight. Usually he stays away from taking that out on others, though, if he can help it.

Appearance

Trystan has raven black hair that he wears somewhat longish, usually wearing it loose. His eyes are a piercing, bright aqua color, with an incredibly intense gaze. He sports a distinct set of black tattoos just under his right and above the left eye (which he went and got after his Harrowing). He has a tendency to have a bit of stubble on his face usually.

His clothing style is usually flashy and colorful, the one thing that he's embraced about being nobility. It can best be described as "quirky", which sometimes either ends up working out quite well or being a total disaster, depending. He likes hats, particularly the fancy Inquisitor's Hat. Wears the Superior Battlemage Mail Legs, and Superior Battlemage Mail Arms. Usually wearing the Superior Enchanter Mail... or the Vestments of the Dragon Hunter. Accessories include the amulet The Eye that Weeps, the Enhanced Lightning Bolt Ring and Enhanced Chain Lightning Ring, and the Superb Belt of Healing.

Abilities and Weapons

Mage: As a mage, certain powers come naturally to Trystan. He commands powers of the elements, having a particular affinity for Storm magic, followed by Winter, then a little less in Inferno. He's only dabbled a little in Spirit magic, making it his weakest area.

Necromancer: Raising the dead and otherwise dealing with spirits comes naturally to Trystan. He officially pursued it as a specialty not long after the Inquisition relocated to Skyhold. This is his strongest magic, and the one which he's studied the most intensely.

Perks: Trystan is well-read, especially when it comes to magic. This has come in handy a number of times during his adventures as Inquisitor (Arcane Knowledge); also has History Knowledge since he's interested and well-read on the subject.

Weapons: As a mage, his favored weapons are staves. The main one that he usually equips is called Deathward.
